What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a highly effective, evidence-based approach to mental health that helps individuals identify and change unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors. It operates on the idea that our thoughts, feelings, and actions are deeply connected—meaning that by shifting the way we think, we can positively influence how we feel and behave.

I incorporate a specialized form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy called The Work®, developed by Byron Katie. This transformative process invites us to write down our stressful or unsettling thoughts—on any topic—and examine them with gentle curiosity, one at a time. We explore whether each thought is truly valid for us and take an honest look at its impact on our emotions, behaviors, and relationships. By considering what life might be like without these thoughts and exploring alternative perspectives that may be just as true—or even truer—we open the door to greater clarity, freedom, and inner peace.

Through this work, we often uncover long-held beliefs that may be inaccurate or unhelpful. Gaining clarity around these limiting thoughts can be profoundly liberating. Rather than forcing ourselves to adopt new beliefs, we simply explore what is actually true with gentleness and compassion. When we genuinely recognize that a belief isn’t true—and that it is causing us pain—it naturally begins to fall away, creating space for something new, fresh, and enlivening.
